How to Help Depression Without MedicationDepression is a nasty thing to have. I know when I suffered from depression it was really hard to understand the value of your life and the things around you. Which is why I also looked for things on how to help depression without medication.

My depression started after a series of really bad panic attacks and stress. Sometimes when your mind is overloaded it just cannot take everything in and decides to explode. Then you become unhappy with one part of your life, then another, then another. Until you find yourself in a position where you don't want to do anything and you have no enjoyment left in life.

Unfortunately the only person that can change this position is you. It obviously takes some time to change your feelings and control your mind in a way that you can get over the depression, but here are some things that I have used to help me in a similar position to yours.

  1. You need to find a passion in life. Something that you really enjoy doing. This will become your break away from all the other things that you are not happy about. You may not have a passion now but find something. Try lots of different things until you find something you want to do everyday. There is no point saying I wish I could do this - but then on the other hand not doing it. So think back in your life about what you really wanted to do, it could be riding horses, painting, writing, shopping, cinema, playing cards anything that will give you a break from the norm. 
  2. If there is something in your life you are not happy about - look at the reasons why you are not happy. 
    1. It could be for example you are not happy in your job. If you are not happy why aren't you happy. If you were to stay there what could you do to get more from the job? If it is really that bad then look to change it. Most people do not enjoy their work but you spend most of your time there. So try and look at alternative options. 
    2. If your relationship is unstable. Then talk to your partner about how you can improve the situation. Relationships are hard work but love takes a team to get through the difficult situations. Try and resolve your issues together. 
    3. Try reading some books on positivity and self development. Watch youtube video's for inspiration. This will help you to understand the depression but also look at how you can improve your current situation. 
  3. Understand that you are control of your own mind. No one can make you happy unless you look for happiness around you. I know it is easy to say but sometimes we are so much luckier than others. We just forget to open our eyes and see the beauty all around of us. 
  4. For every day you are not smiling - you are missing out on the pleasures of the world. You can be happy you just need to find some inspiration and believe in yourself. 
  5. Most people have never been told they are good at something. Generally they are just criticised for not being good enough. So find something you are good at. Join a facebook group or community and join in the conversation. This will provide you with feedback from others on how good you are. Being praised and being told you are good at something really helps to lift your self esteem. 
  6. Make sure you see someone like the doctor. It could be something medical that is causing this that you need to look into. 
  7. Make small changes everyday 
    1. Smile at yourself in the mirror as you walk by. 
    2. Believe in yourself 
    3. Smile at others in the supermarket or on the street 
    4. Watch movies that make you laugh 
    5. Go out with friends and enjoy yourself. 
    6. Pick yourself up bit by bit and set yourself goals that everyday you are going to make a small change today. 
  8. You might also need to change your diet, things like caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods etc are not good for depression. Items like fish, water, fruits and vegetables are extremely good.
